Erskine veteran remembers historic day Japan surrendered during WWII as 76th anniversary approaches

A veteran who deciphered the message that told of Japan's surrender during World War II has told how he will "never forget" the day as Erskine Veterans charity marks the 76th anniversary of the historic day.

Veteran Robert Whitson Johnson, 97, is a resident at The Erskine Home in Bishopton.

Based in Burma, RAF codes and ciphers operator Robert was responsible for deciphering the signal that arrived on August 15, 1945 announcing the surrender of Japan.

The events leading up to the surrender reverberated around the world.

On August 6, 1945 the first atomic bomb, was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

Three days later, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. As a direct result of the bombings on August 15 the Japanese surrendered.

Speaking of his involvement, Robert said: “I was regularly dealing with top-secret information, things I still can’t talk about. But on this day a signal came in that I personally deciphered, which told us the Japanese had surrendered."

Robert has previously attended a number of anniversary commemorations of victory in Japan, including the 75th anniversary last year at Prestwick Airport, where he was able to chat to Red Arrow pilots who performed a display.
