Erskine Bridge closes again as Greenpeace boat sails from Glasgow COP26 site

Police are set to shut down the Erskine Bridge in approach to rush hour today 'for public safety'.

For the second day running, the key route will be closed to traffic, sparking anger from drivers and local residents.

It's understood the bridge is again being closed down to ensure safe passage for a Greenpeace boat as it sails from the COP26 site in Glasgow.

Yesterday, we reported on how the road was temporarily closed over fears the Rainbow Warrior would collide with the bridge due to a short clearance area between the top of the boat and the bridge. Despite the fears, the vessel sailed safely into Glasgow.

Port authorities had declined a request for the boat to berth at the COP26 but Greenpeace said that the captain "decided to ignore the warnings" in their attempts to dock in Glasgow.

Traffic Scotland advised shortly before 2.30pm this afternoon: "Police Scotland will close the #A898 Erskine Bridge for a short period of time late this afternoon for public safety.

"The closure will be around 1630, subject to local tidal conditions.

"Traffic will be diverted & will be reopened as soon as possible."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "The bridge is closing to ensure the safety of the public whilst the vessel makes its passage through the Clyde."

UPDATE: The bridge closed at around 4.05pm and was reopened to traffic at 4.15pm.
