Erskine Bridge reopens following closure to allow Greenpeace yacht to pass

The Erskine Bridge has reopened to traffic after being closed for almost two hours to allow a Greenpeace yacht to pass underneath it.

Traffic Scotland confirmed that Police Scotland requested the route be shut from 2.30pm this afternoon "for public safety".

Activists on Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior are currently sailing up the Clyde, heading for Glasgow where climate summit COP26 is currently taking place.

The route reopened at around 4.05pm this afternoon, with the Rainbow Warrior safely - albeit narrowly - passing underneath just before 4pm.

During the closure there were fears about ambulances heading to and from Dumbarton and Alexandria's nearest A&E department in Paisley.

A member of Save the Vale told the Lennox Herald this afternoon: "The A82 is gridlocked and no emergency services will be able to get through to any of the hospitals with A&E facilities."

There is disruption around the city due to the climate change conference and it is understood there is also congestion at the Clyde Tunnel, another major route over the river.

Port authorities yesterday declined the Rainbow Warrior’s request to berth in Glasgow but Greenpeace said that the captain has “decided to ignore the warnings” and will attempt to dock later this evening.
