Erratic supply hits COVID-19 first dose for longest seven days gap

INDORE: District health authorities have to further postpone the inoculation of first dose of Covid-19 vaccines because of erratic supply.

According to an official communique from health department, there will be no first dose inoculation on July 3 and 5 as days would have second dose inoculation with Covaxin and Covishield respectively only.

The district’s struggle began post June 27- the last day in the mega drive when it inoculated doses in accordance with its expanded capacity in a day. After this, there was only one full vaccination day on July 1 when around 74,000 inoculations were done.

Due to this, there will be a gap of around a week in inoculation of first dose, only if it is done on July 07. District immunisation officer (rural) Dr Tarun Gupta said, “The plans are made on instructions of state government authorities. There is an erratic supply of vaccine, so the plan is made in accordance with it only.”

The issue of the erratic vaccine supply has been consistently hampering the mass COVID-19 vaccination drive since its beginning on January 16 this year.

But this will be the longest gap in inoculation of first dose for a district, which already have covered around 75% of eligible population. The district will carry out inoculation of second dose of covaxin on Saturday with a stock of 63,000 doses against the beneficiaries eligible for it at 75,000.
