Ernesto Valverde gives Lionel Messi injury update ahead of Man Utd second leg

Both Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets will miss Barcelona’s La Liga trip to Huesca this weekend ahead of the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Manchester United at the Camp Nou on Tuesday night.

Barca take a one goal lead into the return fixture after Luis Suarez’s 13th-minute header ricocheted off Luke Shaw and past David De Gea at Old Trafford last Wednesday.

Messi, who laid on the assist for Suarez, suffered a bloodied nose and swollen eye in a challenge with Chris Smalling, with the Argentine's influence waning thereafter.

United grew into the game after going behind - Scott McTominay's performance in midfield was particularly impressive - and the Reds retain hope of reaching the semi-final stages of the competition for the first time since 2011.

Barcelona are 11 points clear of second-placed Atlético Madrid at the summit of La Liga and can thus afford to rest key players, but Ernesto Valverde said on Friday that Messi is still feeling the effects of his injury.

“I spoke to him and he is fine, but it was a hard knock,” Valverde said. “He wasn’t feeling good the day after nor during the rest of the match. It was like a truck had run over him.”

United will look to their comeback victory in the quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain as a source of inspiration for their trip to Catalonia.

The Reds became the first team in the history of the European Cup to reverse a two-goal deficit away from home in the knock-out stages of the competition after Marcus Rashford's 93rd-minute strike at the Parc des Princes sealed one of the most memorable European nights in the club's history.
