KOCHI: Ernakulam is likely to witness around 150 to 200 Covid deaths between August 16 and 31, as per the latest analysis report submitted to the district administration by the health wing. The district has reported 89 Covid deaths between August 16 and 22.
The report further says the ICU admissions will touch between 399 and 512, going by the current trend of cases, by August 31. Currently, as many as 288 patients are under ICU care in the district.
Meanwhile, it has been noted that the duration of hospitalization of Covid patients is coming down compared to the same during the second wave. “If the normal duration of hospitalization of a Covid patient was 10 days during the second wave, it has come down to around seven days now. Besides, hospitalization and ICU admissions have also been coming down despite cases rising for the past two months. Vaccination might be the reason for less hospitalization,” said a health official.
The report also noted that 18.01% of the cases reported in the district in 17 days in August were children below 18 years. Meanwhile, 25.94% of cases reported during the same period were vaccinated people. However, it was only 19.33% in July.
Health authorities also said the Covid fatality ratio is the highest in Kadungalloor panchayat with 2.28%, but the number of deaths is the highest in Kochi corporation limit due to the high population.
Authorities expect that at least first dose vaccination will touch 80% of the target population in two days, and this will help to bring down reporting of more cases among them.
