Erling Haaland is 'more likely' to score away from home for Man City

Erling Haaland has already had people questioning his start to life at Manchester City.

The big-money arrival from Dortmund notched twice on his Premier League debut in City's 2-0 win over West Ham. That brace went some way to silencing critics who jumped on him after drawing a blank in the Community Shield defeat to Liverpool. But despite chipping in with an assist in the 4-0 home win over Bournemouth, Haaland again struggled to fashion chances and registered just a handful of touches before being subbed on 74 minutes.

That latter game had some questioning whether the Norwegian's impact in matches at the Etihad would be diminished due to teams being content to sit behind the ball and supress City.

Former City man Shaun Wright-Phillips believes the 22-year-old may well enjoy more success away from home. Indeed, in his first season-and-a-half in the Bundesliga Haaland scored more than half of his goals - 23 out of 40 - away from Signal Iduna Park.

“It’s been a fantastic start for him,” Wright-Phillips told talkSPORT in association with bet365. “At the start of the Premier League he’s managed to get two goals and one assist in two games. I think he’s been fantastic.

“I think he’s more likely to score more goals away from home because of the way teams play when they come to the Etihad. It’s going to be an interesting journey and a massive learning curve and if he gets it right he’s only going to improve and make his all round game better because he can play in all situations. But I think he’s been very good since he started.”

In his final campaign in Germany, Haaland reversed that trend with just four of his 22 league goals last season coming away from home. He has a chance to add to his away tally with his new club on Sunday, when Pep Guardiola's side travel to Newcastle.
