Erling Haaland waved to fans after Borussia Dortmund's win over Greuther Furth last week.
Dortmund beat Furth 3-0 at Signal Iduna Park and Haaland scored a brace, but he was also spotted waving to fans.
Dortmund's sporting director, Michael Zorc, subsequently admitted that the post-match gesture from Haaland was 'a bit strange'.
That was also the last home game for Dortmund before the winter break in Germany and now speculation is rife that Haaland - the centre-forward scored 41 goals in 41 games last season - could be set to leave the club in the January transfer window.
Manchester United and Manchester City are both admirers of Haaland, who is attracting interest from Europe's most elite sides.
Zorc was asked for a follow up for his comments on Haaland's gesture and he confirmed that Dortmund want to keep him.
“We’d like Haaland to stay. We don't have to give him up – not even for economic reasons," Zorc told Sky.
“We also know that under certain conditions Erling has the opportunity to leave."
Haaland's agent, Mino Raiola, also admitted on Sunday that another year at Dortmund for the player is feasible.
"We will look for the best option and I also never ruled out another year at Borussia Dortmund," Raiola said.
