Erling Haaland causes confusion after picture of him wearing Coventry shirt goes viral

Erling Haaland is hoping to take the Premier League by storm after his mega-money transfer to Manchester City.

The Norwegian striker completed a £51million move to the Etihad this summer, ending long speculation over his next destination after a superb scoring record for German side Borussia Dortmund.

But fans have been left bewildered by an image on social media of Haaland wearing an opposition shirt. The striker turned 22 on Thursday and was sent birthday wishes from many of his friends over the social media site Instagram. In one of them, the Norwegian was bizarrely shown wearing a Coventry City shirt while sitting at a table with a friend.

The strip in question was worn by the Sky Blues back in the 2020-21 campaign and it is unclear why he was wearing it or when the picture was originally taken.

Haaland is set to finally make his debut for City on Saturday when Pep Guardiola's men take on Bayern Munich in a glamour friendly in the United States. Niggling injuries have so far kept the striker on the bench but he is expected to play some part against a Bayern side he regularly came up against in the Bundesliga for Dortmund.

Guardiola said: "If this afternoon there is nothing wrong in the training session, or tonight he feels bad and falls out of bed and breaks his ankle, then he will play.

"One of the things I am trying to discover is if he is a nice guy. I don't like to work much with guys who are not nice.

"When you have a locker room and the chemistry is good, that is worth more than hours of tactics. This summer we have bought some exceptional people. And the rest we know each other.

"And we are sad because Raheem (Sterling), Gabriel (Jesus) and Oleks (Zinchenko) were incredibly beloved. Since I arrived in Manchester, the chemistry has been incredible. It makes things good for me. Erling and Julian (Alvarez) are here and will have a positive effect on our game. We scored a lot of goals last season; we won the Premier League and got the semi-finals of the Champions League.

"We were one of the most top scorers in Europe. They have the quality to score goals and that for us is most important."

Upon his arrival at City, Haaland spoke about the importance of his dad Alf-Inge having previously played for the club.

Haaland junior said: "I was born in England. I've been a City fan my whole life. I know a lot about the club. And I think in the end I feel a bit home here and also I think I can develop and get the best out of my game.

"He (Alf-Inge) lived in England. He played for the club. Of course, a lot of things has changed in the last 20 years but he lived here so you know, knows what it is and we've just been speaking about basically how it is."
