Erin Phillips crowned AFLW MVP for second time

Adelaide Crows star Erin Phillips has been named the most valuable player (MVP) in the women's AFL competition for the second time.

The Crows co-captain also won the MVP award in 2017, when Adelaide won its first AFLW premiership.

Phillips finished well clear of Fremantle's Kiara Bowers with Collingwood's Ashleigh Brazill third in the voting.

"It's a truly humbling experience to be voted by your peers as the most valuable player in the league," Phillips said.

"Individual accolades don't sit that well with me because it's your teammates and coaches who help you get to the level but I'm proud of what I've been able to achieve in my AFLW career so far."

"There's a huge amount of talent running around in the AFLW and it's increasing every year.

"The future of the competition is brighter than ever and I'm honoured to be a part of it."

The 33-year-old former basketball player suffered an ACL injury in the third quarter of Adelaide's emphatic grand final victory over Carlton on Sunday afternoon and was led off the field to a rousing reception from a record crowd at the Adelaide Oval.

Due to that injury, Phillips was unable to attend the awards ceremony in St Kilda.

Phillips' Crows teammate and co-captain Chelsea Randall was named the competition's most courageous player for the third consecutive season, making her the only-ever recipient of the award.

Defeated grand final skipper Brianna Davey was recognised at the ceremony as the best captain of the season for her work leading Carlton, narrowly beating Phillips to the crown.

Carlton's teenage sensation Madison Prespakis was handed the league's best first-year player award.

The 18-year-old, who was pick three in the 2018 draft, was streets ahead of her closest competition, GWS Giant Alyce Parker.
