Erik Van Rooyen Leads Mexico Open With Strong Start

Erik van Rooyen took the lead in the Mexico Open at Vidanta with a stellar 8-under 63, highlighted by two eagles during his round. The South African golfer's impressive performance put him one shot ahead of the competition, showcasing his skill and determination to secure a second PGA Tour title in Mexico within the last four months.

Van Rooyen's round included a remarkable 3-iron shot to 6 feet for an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole, followed by a pitch-in eagle on the par-5 12th. Despite a minor setback with a bogey on the 15th hole, his overall play was exceptional.

Sami Valimaki from Finland also had a strong showing, carding a 64. Notably, he salvaged par after hitting into a hazard on the sixth hole and then eagled the reachable par-4 seventh with a drive to 12 feet.

Other notable performances included Cristobal del Solar of Chile, who shot a 65. Van Rooyen, who previously won the World Wide Technology Championship in November, expressed his affinity for golf in Mexico, citing the unique atmosphere and course conditions that seem to suit his game.
