Erik ten Hag's Man Utd can match Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City's historic feat

Erik ten Hag secured his first trophy as Manchester United boss last weekend as he masterminded a Carabao Cup success against Newcastle, and another one could be on the way.

The Red Devils earned a 2-0 victory over Eddie Howe’s men at Wembley, triggering wild celebrations both in the stands and among the Man United squad, and that was then followed up by a fine come-from-behind victory against West Ham in the FA Cup on Wednesday thanks to three goals in the final 13 minutes, an own goal from Nayef Aguerd and strikes from Alejandro Garnacho and Fred.

The Red Devils are also still in the Europa League and firmly embroiled in a race for the Premier League crown. After already bagging the Carabao Cup, they could potentially become just the sixth club in English football history to secure both domestic cups in the same campaign.

Take a look at who the other clubs are and how they did it below:

Arsenal (1993)

Despite finishing a lowly tenth in the Premier League in its first campaign, the Gunners still managed to enjoy a successful season with two cup successes. They at first took two legs to get beyond Millwall in the Second Round of the league cup - eventually winning on penalties.

They also required two bites of the cherry to find a route past Derby. Division Three side Scarborough were their next opponents with George Graham’s side only just earning a slender 1-0 win.

They then got beyond Nottingham Forest in the fifth round before beating Crystal Palace 5-1 on aggregate in a two-legged semi-final. Their opponents at Wembley were Sheffield Wednesday and it looked as though the Gunners were on the way to a shock defeat when John Harkes gave the Owls the lead.

Paul Merson equalised just over 15 minutes later, with Stephen Morrow netting the eventual winner in the second-half to secure the League Cup. Arsenal carried their form into the FA Cup.

They eased past Yeovil Town in the third round before being held 2-2 by Leeds in the next round. Another entertaining match, the replay ended 3-2 to see the Gunners progress.

Nottingham Forest, Ipswich and local rivals Spurs were all defeated en-route to another Wembley date with Sheffield Wednesday. The first game ended 1-1 after goals from Ian Wright and David Hirst.

The replay was also another close affair as Wright and Chris Waddle exchanged goals, with Andy Linighan scoring a 119th-minute winner.

Liverpool (2001)

A hugely successful season under Gerard Houllier, the Reds actually won three trophies during the 2000/01 campaign including the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup. They kicked off their respective domestic cup campaigns in November as they beat Chelsea in extra-time before they followed that up with an 8-0 demolition of Stoke City.

Fulham were then the next victims as Liverpool scored three goals in extra-time to progress. They were then matched with Crystal Palace in the semi-finals and looked to be going out of the competition after a 2-1 defeat in the first-leg at Selhurst Park.

They put any potential scare to bed in the return as they racked up a 5-0 victory to secure an emphatic 6-2 aggregate scoreline. It was certainly not as straightforward in the final at the Millenium Stadium against Birmingham.

Robbie Fowler had given the Reds the lead before Darren Purse equalised with a late penalty. Liverpool would eventually claim the cup on penalties.

Compared to the League Cup, Liverpool’s run in the FA Cup was slightly more straightforward. They eased past Rotherham and Leeds before chalking up 4-2 wins against Man City and Tranmere.

Liverpool ended Wycombe Wanderers’ dream run in the competition to set up a final meeting with Arsenal - Michael Owen’s brace famously securing the trophy.

Chelsea (2007)

Despite 2006/07 being Jose Mourinho ’s final full campaign during his first spell at Chelsea, it was still a successful one. The Blues secured the first piece of silverware with an entertaining run in the League Cup.

They easily got beyond Blackburn and Aston Villa to reach the quarter-finals. Didier Drogba proved the difference in the last-eight as he guided home a 79th-minute winner.

Wycombe managed to reach the semi-finals in another domestic cup this season and threatened an upset as they held Chelsea to a 1-1 first leg scoreline. The Blues could not be stopped though as Mourinho’s side chalked up a dominant 4-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

Drogba proved to be the key man in a final once more despite Arsenal’s Theo Walcott opening the scoring. The Ivorian striker scored twice in a man-of-the-match display to secure the League Cup.

The FA Cup was soon added to the Blues’ trophy haul three months’ later. Chelsea racked up comprehensive wins against Macclesfield, Nottingham Forest and Norwich before being held to a 3-3 draw by Spurs.

They won 2-1 in a replay before edging past Blackburn Rovers in the semi-finals to reach Wembley. Drogba shone once more as he scored a 116th-minute winner against Man United.

Man City (2019)

A stunning season under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola, Man City managed to win the domestic treble, whilst they also secured the Community Shield before the campaign officially got underway. They added the League Cup in February to tee-up what would be a brilliant campaign.

They easily found a route past Oxford United and then Fulham to set up a clash with Premier League rivals Manchester City. The game ended 1-1 at the King Power Stadium before Willy Caballero saved three penalties to book a spot in the next round.

Burton Albion were their next opponents and City all-but booked their final place with a dominant 9-0 win at the Etihad Stadium. They added to that in the second-leg as Sergio Aguero made it double figures on aggregate.

Chelsea stood in their way as the two sides clashed in the final and it was once again decided on penalties. Much like their League Cup win, City enjoyed an irresistible run in the FA Cup.

7-0 and 5-0 wins over Rotherham and Burnley respectively got them up and running before a 4-1 victory over Newport. Championship side Swansea threatened a brief upset as they raced into a 2-0 lead only for City to charge back with three unanswered goals in the second-half.

Gabriel Jesus’ goal was enough to squeeze past Brighton in the semi-finals before they racked up the joint biggest ever FA Cup final win by defeating Watford at Wembley.

Liverpool (2022)

The most recent side to complete the domestic cup double, Liverpool were successful twice at Wembley last term. They kicked off their run in the League Cup by finding a route past Norwich and Preston before beating Leicester on penalties having come from 3-1 down at Anfield.

A 0-0 draw with Arsenal in the semi-final first-leg was followed by a Diogo Jota inspired display at the Emirates Stadium. Another London side Chelsea awaited Jurgen Klopp ’s side in the final and the Reds were successful after a mammoth penalty shootout.

Liverpool’s FA Cup win looked almost identical. Straight-forward successes against Shrewsbury and Cardiff set them en-route to Wembley before they squeezed past Championship sides Norwich and Nottingham Forest. A thrilling tie with Man City then booked their ticket to Wembley.

The Reds raced into a 3-0 victory before then eventually managing to fight off a comeback from Guardiola’s side. Liverpool eventually won the FA Cup with yet another penalty shootout win over Chelsea.
