Erik ten Hag puts Man Utd stars in their place with Cristiano Ronaldo learning hard way

Manchester United stars know not to cross a line with Erik ten Hag because he's not afraid to put them in their place.

That's according to new Red Devils signing Tom Heaton, who claims his new boss is something of a disciplinarian behind the scenes at Old Trafford - providing insight on how Ten Hag would have handled the recent Cristiano Ronaldo situation.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner challenged Ten Hag's authority during an explosive interview with Piers Morgan, saying he has no respect for his boss and that he feels betrayed by United. The comments ultimately led to the Portugal international's contract being terminated while he was on World Cup duty.

Little is known about the talks that took place between Ten Hag, Ronaldo and the United board following the interview's release.

But if Heaton's recent observations on the Dutchman are anything to go by then Ronaldo will have felt the full force of the Red Devils manager's authority.

"He has brought a clear messaging, clear lines of what's acceptable and what's not," Heaton said of Ten Hag. "Responsibility on everyone, the professional side of it, and when you cross it he's there to put you back in your place.

"I also think off the back of that we've been a little bit more successful so far, nobody is getting carried away, one game at a time.

"But when results are improving and everything is moving forward a little bit more, everyone is on the bandwagon and pushing for that and wanting that.

"So that's been a key feature, his strength in what's acceptable and what's not acceptable and carrying that through. Everyone has a different view on it, and that would be fair. My personal view is that I think that really does make a difference.

"When there is a consequence to players, a discipline, you know not to cross the line, if you do you'll be out."

Ten Hag's hands-on approach has received mild criticism, with Gabby Agbonlahor among the pundits claiming the Man United boss had gone "too far" with his unbreakable rules.

But his style of management has certainly been paying off for him with the Dutchman becoming the fastest United boss in the club's history to reach 20 wins. He's also steered the struggling side back into the Champions League qualification spots.

United have won eight games on the trot following their recent Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Charlton, but face a stern test in bitter rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.
