Erik ten Hag names Man Utd squad for Leeds pre-season friendly with absences explained

Manchester United will begin their pre-season against Leeds without the likes of Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes.

The Red Devils are jetting to Oslo, Norway's capital, for a match against their rivals, whom they took four points off last season. United are due to play one more match in Europe, at Scotland's Murrayfield Stadium, before they head across the Atlantic to the USA.

Erik ten Hag has only bought in one major face this summer, Mason Mount, and the new No 7 is part of a 26-man squad that will take on the Yorkshire side. The United boss has had to leave behind a host of notable names who were involved regularly last season.

Anthony Martial continued to struggle for goals and has not been included for the game as he continues to recover from an injury he picked up against Fulham on the final day of the Premier League season. In attack Ten Hag has named Amad following his impressive loan spell at Sunderland.

Fellow youngsters Joe Hugill and Shola Shoretire are also named alongside Jadon Sancho, who is still looking to find his best form after two years in Manchester. Mount and Fred are the only two midfielders named who would be deemed regular first-team stars.

Hannibal Mejbri, who was on loan at Birmingham last term, was named alongside the likes of Toby Collyer, Dan Gore, Isak Hansen-Aaroen, Kobbie Mainoo, Maxi Oyedele and Charlie Savage.

Ten Hag's first choice centre-half pairing - Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane - can continue their partnership against Leeds should they be picked. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who proved his worth towards the latter end of the season, is also included alongside Brandon Williams.

United have just seen David de Gea leave after more than a decade with their focus now on signing a new No 1, thought to be Andre Onana from Inter Milan. Tom Heaton could deputise for now with Nathan Bishop and Matej Kovar also named. There is no spot for Dean Henderson, who is tipped to leave after his loan spell at Nottingham Forest last term, due to injury.

Maguire, Luke Shaw, Rashford, Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, Anthony Elanga, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Scott McTominay, Alejandro Garnacho, Tyrell Malacia, Facundo Pellistri, Alex Telles and Eric Bailly were called up by their national sides earlier this summer and were never in contention to face Leeds.
