Erik ten Hag makes Manchester United 'standards' admission in shock decision after Liverpool thrashing

Erik Ten Hag admitted his Manchester United players deserve the chance of "rehabilitation" after their 7-0 thrashing against Liverpool - with the Red Devils boss naming the same starting XI against Real Betis on Thursday.

The Dutchman had been expected to make a number of changes for United's Europa League last-16 first leg tie against the La Liga side, with Lisandro Martinez, Antony and Casemiro coming under fire for their performances in the club-record defeat at Anfield just five days ago.

However, speaking to BT Sport beforehand, Ten Hag backed his players who were involved in the drubbing to deliver a response and later labelled the side his "best team".

“We want to win, we need a good performance, so we think this team is the best team to make a good performance and to win the game," said Ten Hag. "They [players] get the opportunity for rehabilitation, but we looked to this game, this is the most important game and we picked the team to give us the best chance of winning the game.

"We lowered our standards in the last couple of games. Sunday we got hammered for in the second half and we have to get back to our standards, values, demands and that's what we have to bring on the pitch.

"We need high standards because we want to win."
