Erik Ten Hag makes Liverpool 'scars' admission ahead of Manchester United match

Erik Ten Hag has admitted he is aware of the ‘scars’ Manchester United suffered in last season’s humiliating defeats to Liverpool - and admitted it is up to his squad to heal them.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds travel to Manchester tonight, with both sides currently winless and in the bottom half at this early stage of the new season. But despite a bitter rivalry during the Premier League era and some fierce clashes, a trip to Old Trafford may encourage Liverpool fans, given that they won 5-0 there last season.

That result compounded the misery around the red half of Manchester last October, and a 4-0 thrashing at Anfield contributed to the Red Devils’ worst ever season in Premier League history. And new boss Ten Hag has acknowledged the scars suffered form last season’s double battering, admitting that it is up to him and his players to turn that around tonight.

“I am aware of the scars from last year, so it’s up to us to turn it around,” Erik Ten Hag told Sky Sports .

“Liverpool are strong, I really like them, I think last year they played the best football in Europe so I admire them. But even good teams, you can beat them.”

Manchester United enter tonight’s huge game in disarray, with consecutive defeats to Brighton and Brentford leaving them with zero points and only above West Ham by the fact they have one goal and the Hammers have none. Supporters have organised a mass protest against the Glazers in the build-up to the game.

New £60million summer signing Casemiro will not be eligible to play against the Reds, but is likely to be unveiled as a Manchester United player prior to kick-off.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are also looking for their first win after draws against Fulham and Crystal Palace - there will be renewed optimism among Reds fans following Manchester City’s 3-3 draw at Newcastle on Sunday.
