Erik ten Hag lays down the law to Man Utd flops and vows reputations count for nothing

Erik ten Hag has vowed to get tough with the fragile egos in Manchester United's dressing-room.

Ajax boss ten Hag takes over at Old Trafford this summer and warned United's players they must stay in line with him or they will find themselves out of favour.

Ten Hag said he is ready to manage big stars of the stature of Cristiano Ronaldo and warned he will make no concessions to players – regardless of their status or profile.

Asked about dealing with player egos, Ten Hag said: "This is the biggest challenge for every trainer-coach at the moment. Those egos are also created by society, aren't they. And they are also necessary to survive in such a world. But I have to make sure they keep working together.”

Ten Hag, 52, was asked if he is ready to handle stars like Ronaldo and said: “I think so, but I will remain myself in that too. I will not change my view on coaching. The material always determines how you play, but I indicate the requirements that come with it and the standards.

"I tell who has what task and anyone not living up to it will be told that, regardless of who it is. I make no concessions in that regard.”

Ten Hag, speaking to Dutch outlet Trouw, suggested he had been given assurances on transfers before agreeing to accept the United job. "I set requirements in advance about how I want to work," said Ten Hag.

"If they aren't granted, I won't go. I am ultimately responsible, and I am judged on the results. I don't want to be the sole ruler, I believe in co-operation, but having a say in transfers is a condition for me."
