Erik ten Hag hopes to unleash Wout Weghorst on Man City as he jets into Manchester

Manchester United want to register new loan signing Wout Weghorst in time for Saturday's derby.

United have agreed a deal to take the Burnley striker – who spent the first half of the season at Besiktas – on loan for the remainder of the campaign. Weghorst flew to Manchester on Thursday to undergo a medical ahead of completing the move, which will see United pay a £2.5million loan fee.

Weghorst was videoed arriving at Istanbul Airport on his way to Manchester, shaking the hand of a local after exiting his people carrier before smiling and waving at the camera on his way into the terminal.

United boss Erik ten Hag has been looking for a striker to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo's exit, but has been restricted to a loan signing having spent his transfer budget last summer.

Ten Hag wants Weghorst registered by tomorrow, to have him as an option from the bench for the visit of Pep Guardiola's champions to Old Trafford. Weghorst, 6ft 6in, is a traditional target man, an option United do not currently have, and has scored nine goals in 18 games for Besiktas.

The 30-year-old also scored two goals for Holland in their World Cup quarter-final with Argentina last month, to take the tie to extra-time, before losing on penalties.

Weghorst was less prolific at Burnley, scoring just two goals in 20 appearances following his £12m arrival from Wolfsburg a year ago, as the Clarets were relegated to the Championship. Weghorst cleared out his locker at Besiktas and said his farewells to his team-mates on Thursday morning.
