Erik ten Hag explains how he's changing Manchester United culture

Erik ten Hag wants his new Manchester United side to keep their high standards in training up throughout the season to build a winning mentality.

Ten Hag has enjoyed a positive and productive pre-season in which, despite off-field distractions, he has already made a clear impact on United. It's been a tough summer for the players who have been put through their paces and not been allowed any mistakes without their new coach pulling them up on — which has led to the side already looking much sharper, fitter and well-drilled on the pitch.

Just how much the team have taken on board will be revealed on Sunday when United's Premier League campaign gets under way against Brighton. But Ten Hag won't be allowing the early standards he's set slip when the season begins.

“It is constructing a winning culture, and it starts in the week at Carrington: by high standards, by good values and work," he told United's in-house media.

“Work [as a] consequence of that, work on the way of playing and in the end you will achieve success.”

It's a big task for the Dutchman but one that he is relishing. He adds: "Yeah it is a busy job, but I don’t hate working so no problem,” Erik told us.

“Especially not when you are in football. The best is to be a football player, but if that is not possible anymore, be a coach, be a manager. It’s a great job, so I get a lot of energy out of it and I hope to bring it over to my team.”
