Erik Sviatchenko up for award as ex-Celtic star's Midtjylland form earns plaudits

Former Celtic star Erik Sviatchenko has been nominated for player of the year in Denmark.

The defender returned to his homeland in 2018 with FC Midtjylland and has had a successful stint back at the club.

He played twice against Rangers in the Europa League this season and his league form has led to him being one of four players being nominated for the prize.

Strangely, the award is for the year of 2019 rather than the season as is normally the case around Europe.

But the Danish football authorities posted the reasons as to why Sviatchenko was nominated with their statement saying: "Erik Sviatchenko has had a really good 2019 in FCM.

"After his return to the club in 2018 from Celtic, he has emerged as extremely important to his team. Erik is the epitome of FCM: dedicated, humble and ambitious. He is the natural leader and leads the team and leads.

"As a defender, he delivers every time as strong in melee and main game and is obviously central to FCM's corner kick - defensively and offensively."

He's up against Copenhagen's Carlos Zeca, who will face Celtic in the Europa League later this month, Brondby's Kamil Wilczek and 2018 winner Robert Skov, who moved from Copenhagen to Hoffenheim last summer.

Sviatchenko has won the award before, picking up the trophy in 2015 ahead of his move to Celtic.
