Erik Lamela stars in Carabao Cup win as Jose Mourinho outlines Tottenham's transfer wish

Here is your Tottenham Hotspur morning digest for Wednesday, 30 September.

Reguilon and Lamela star in Carabao Cup victory

Tottenham progressed to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday evening.

After falling behind to Timo Werner's first Chelsea goal after just 19 minutes, Spurs left it late to salvage an equaliser, with Erik Lamela drawing the home side level on 83 minutes.

That forced the contest to a shoot-out, with Spurs coming out on top, with Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount missing the only spot-kick of the 10 taken between the two sides.

Despite having delivered a patchy performance in the first 45, Spurs turned the screw after the break and delivered an excellent showing, with Lamela, debutant Sergio Reguilon, who claimed the assist for the goal, and Tanguy Ndombele all impressing.

Mourinho outlines transfer wish

Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho has made it clear that he must add a striker to his squad before the transfer window closes next week.

After opting not to start Harry Kane against Chelsea on Tuesday evening, the Portuguese chief fielded a front two of Steven Bergwijn and Lamela, highlighting his need for a striker more than ever.

When asked what his front two was against the Blues, Mourinho said: "Nobody. We don't have a nine. Sonny is injured and Harry has a big game to play Thursday," he told Sky Sports.

"We have to protect him. In this moment we don't have. We are a different club than others. We have to do it in different ways. Today we don't have that number nine."

Nuno Santos faces touchline ban

Tottenham's goalkeeper coach Nuno Santos has been handed a one-match touchline ban after being charged with improper conduct by the Football Association for getting involved in a heated exchange at the end of Spurs' 1-1 draw with Newcastle United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

Spurs thought they had done enough to secure their second Premier League win of the season after Lucas Moura's first half opener, only for them to be denied by a last-gasp Newcastle penalty, which was awarded for a more than controversial handball against Eric Dier.

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson stepped up to stroke home the resulting penalty and earn the Magpies an unlikely point.

After the full time whistle, Santos made his feelings known to referee Peter Bankes by storming onto the pitch to confront him and his assistants.
