Erik Lamela sends 14-word message to Tottenham fans after winning Puskas award

Erik Lamela was given the Puskas Award last night for his stunning 'rabona' goal in Tottenham Hotspur's 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in March 2021.

Lamela's fantastic finish won the Premier League goal of the season gong and beat off even more competition to claim the coveted goal of the year award.

The Argentine was later sent off as Spurs were defeated at the Emirates, but his goal will live long in the memory of Spurs fans.

He is the second Tottenham player to win the award in as many years after Son Heung-min won the prize in 2020 for an excellent solo goal in a game against Burnley.

Lamela beat Czech Republic international Patrick Schick as well as Porto star Mehdi Teremi to the award, and is delighted to have won the awarded.

As per the Daily Star, after joining the ceremony via video link, Lamela said: "Thank you so much, I’m very happy to win this award.

"Honestly, nothing [was going through his mind], in that moment I didn’t think too much.

"I didn’t realise how special the goal was.

"I just kicked the ball and started running around the pitch with my teammates!"

Tottenham also congratulated him on Twitter and the now Sevilla star was thankful for their recognition and love: "Thanks @Spursofficial

"Thanks to the fans, thanks to my teammates. I love you all."

Lamela moved to Sevilla in the summer in a player-plus-cash swap deal that resulted in Bryan Gil going the other way.

But Spurs fans are still thankful for everything he done for the club, and he's known to be a popular figure at the club he spent eight years with.
