Erik Lamela, Kyle Walker-Peters, Christian Eriksen - Winners and losers from Man City vs Spurs

Winners

Erik Lamela

There was plenty of social media vitriol when it was announced that the Argentine would be starting against Manchester City, particularly his inclusion ahead of Lucas Moura.

Ninety minutes later and with a goal and an assist under his belt, Lamela could rightly turn around say 'what was all the fuss about?'.

He might not be everyone's cup of tea, but a goal and an assist against Manchester City is no easy thing. It shows that he can create against the best all the while adding that battling edge he brings.

It wasn't the perfect performance of course, but it was enough in the face of the waves of City attacks to help Spurs to the point.

Lucas Moura

He might not provide enough when it comes to assists, but the Brazilian is swiftly becoming a real goalscoring threat for Spurs.

His leap is ridiculous for a player under 6ft and that's why Mauricio Pochettino made a real point of making sure he was on before Lamela's corner was taken.

The only downside for Lucas is whether he ends up making a case for himself as a super sub when everyone is back and fit because Pochettino will have a lot of options.

Kyle Walker-Peters

This one is more about experience. The 22-year-old faced the toughest test he probably ever will, and that's even after his good display against Cristiano Ronaldo in pre-season.

It wasn't a perfect performance. Walker-Peters was partly culpable for Sterling's goal although the quality of De Bruyne's ball was something else.

There were mistakes here and there but on the whole he did well in the circumstances, with a number of important interceptions and blocks and he will have come through it stronger.

Danny Rose on the other side arguably had an even more difficult time dealing with De Bruyne despite Walker-Peters getting doubled up on frequently.

Pochettino seemed to hint afterwards that Walker-Peters will get a chance to make a play for the shirt in the coming weeks and this could be the run of games he's always needed.

Losers

Christian Eriksen

After showing why Spurs needed him so much the previous weekend when coming off the bench against Aston Villa, this was a match when Eriksen showed how he can struggle to impact the very biggest matches on occasions.

Of course most Tottenham players struggled in the path of the rampant City players but if the Dane has the desire to play for a bigger club as he said earlier in the summer then these are the kind of games he needs to be running.

He's got the ability to do so and he certainly did his defensive share, but that's not the main reason he's there. Harry Kane was starved of the service Eriksen usually provides.

Victor Wanyama

This partly applies to Eric Dier, but the fact that Wanyama wasn't even on the bench this week and Pochettino now trusts 18-year-old Oliver Skipp to come on against Manchester City at 2-2 indicates that the Kenyan's time at the club could be coming to a close.

With the transfer windows still open abroad and his recent knee issues throwing doubt on how much Spurs can rely on him this season, Wanyama seems to be well down the pecking order now with Ndombele, Winks, Sissoko, Dier and Skipp ahead of him.

Serge Aurier

Similar reasons to Wanyama's but it really shouldn't be in Aurier's case. The Ivorian should be raring to go in the wake of Kieran Trippier's departure to Atletico Madrid.

Instead he, like Wanyama, didn't even make the bench after being on there against Villa. He's fit now but Walker-Peters is still being trusted to carry on in the right-back slot.

Aurier could still make his play for the shirt ahead of Walker-Peters and Juan Foyth, who is out until next month with his ankle injury, but those links with a return to PSG won't go away and there's never really been a sense that Pochettino has been completely sold by him.
