Erik Lamela breaks Tottenham players' social media silence after Fulham fixture postponement

Tottenham Hotspur should be reflecting on their final game of 2020.

Instead, Jose Mourinho's side were given Wednesday evening off after their Premier League clash at home to London rivals Fulham was postponed just a few hours before kick-off.

The game was called off as a result of a coronavirus outbreak at the west London side.

A number of first-team players and staff had tested positive for the virus and after Everton vs Manchester City suffered the same fate on Monday night, Tottenham vs Fulham was the second match in two days to be affected.

Tottenham: 2020 in review

Tottenham issued a statement regarding the decision, sending their best wishes to Fulham following the positive Covid-19 cases and confirmed the game will be rescheduled for a later date.

"We can confirm that our Premier League home fixture against Fulham, scheduled to take place this evening (Wednesday 30 December), has been postponed," a statement reads.

"The Premier League informed us of the decision this afternoon, with Fulham having requested the postponement on the grounds of the number of COVID-19 positive cases among their players and staff.

"Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur sends their best wishes to Fulham for a safe and speedy recovery to all those who are affected.

"Details of a new date for the fixture will be confirmed in due course."

With that said, football.london understands Tottenham are believed to be very unhappy over the late decision to postpone the game against the Cottagers.

As a result, there's been a hush around the Spurs squad following the fixture decision but Erik Lamela has become one of the first to speak out and he has a message for the Fulham players and staff.

"Suspended match," he wrote on Instagram. "Hope everyone is okay @fulhamfc.

"No game today, I hope everyone is ok at @fulhamfc."

The fixture postponement means Spurs will have had six days rest between drawing away at Wolves and welcoming Leeds United to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Lamela made his return to action following 11 games out in the EFL Cup quarter-final win over Stoke City last week and played the final six minutes against Wolves.

He may have been in contention for more game time had the Fulham game gone ahead, but will be able to build up his fitness ahead of the Leeds clash.
