Eric Reid, Colin Kaepernick settle collusion grievances with NFL

How do you cap off a week that started out with a three-year, $22 million extension? Well, just ask Eric Reid, who scored himself another meaningful victory on Friday.

The Carolina Panthers safety and former San Francisco 49ers teammate Colin Kaepernick have reached settlements in their respective collusion cases against the NFL. Mark Geragos, Kaepernick’s lawyer, released a statement about the agreements through Twitter.

Kaepernick filed his grievance against the league on Oct. 15, 2017, alleging an organized effort among team owners to keep him out of the league. The quarterback’s reasoning behind the accusation, of course, stemmed from his protests against social injustice. Starting in the 2016 season, he took a knee during pregame performances of the national anthem.

Reid, the first to join Kaepernick in his demonstrations, followed suit by filing his own grievance on May 2, 2018. He too remained a free agent until his initial signing with the Panthers four weeks into the 2018 season.

The former first-round pick of the 49ers went on to impress in his return to the field, totaling 71 tackles, a sack and an interception in his 13 games as a starter with Carolina. Kaepernick, however, is still unsigned.

While the details of the settlements have not been made public, both Reid and Kaepernick presumably stand to collect substantial monetary compensation as a result of the arrangement.
