Eric Lowndes reportedly quits Dublin panel as they face defensive crisis ahead of Meath clash

Dublin face a defensive crisis ahead of this weekend's clash with Meath after Eric Lowndes reportedly left the Dublin panel.

The Irish Independent reports that the St Peregrine's man quit Dessie Farrell's panel before their Leinster opener against Wexford.

Lowndes' departure would further worsen a defensive crisis within the All-Ireland champions, with Dublin set to be without several key men ahead of their semi-final clash with Meath on Sunday.

John Small, Johnny Cooper, Eoin Murchan and Robbie McDaid are all fitness doubts ahead of the Croke Park showdown, while veteran goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton is not currently involved with the six-in-a-row winners.

Lowndes was among the 2013 crop of young players to make their senior breakthrough alongside the likes of Paul Mannion, Ciaran Kilkenny and Jack McCaffrey.

A versatile member of the panel, Lowndes never established himself as a regular starter under Jim Gavin or Farrell, with his most recent Championship appearance coming in last year's Leinster final win over Meath.

He adds to the growing list of players to have stepped away from the Dublin panel without officially retiring, with Jack McCaffrey, Paul Mannion and Stephen Cluxton among the big names to step back since Gavin's resignation in late 2019.
