Eric Gordon prefers to retire in Houston

According to Kelly Iko of The Athletic, guard Eric Gordon would like to retire with the Houston Rockets. Gordon has had a successful three seasons in Houston, averaging 16.8 points on 56.1% true shooting and helped the Rockets reach the Western Conference Finals last season. Gordon struggled with injuries in New Orleans, but Houston’s training staff has been able to keep him healthy for 86.2% of his games. In three seasons, Gordon has already played nearly as much games (212) as he did in five seasons with the Pelicans (221).

Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reported that Gordon was approached by the Rockets with the idea of a contract extension this summer, but he declined.

There was extension talks, but nothing really serious. I would much rather be here as long as I can. Everything will work out. I’ll be here another two years. We’ll see what happens. I’ll see how the next two years go, but I would definitely like to be here the rest of my career.

Gordon is in the third season of a four-year, $52 million contract. With the salary cap going up, it makes sense why Gordon would want to keep his flexibility open. While he wants to remain with the team, it’s possible he just waits until free agency and resigns with Houston when they’ll have his full-bird rights.
