Eric Garcia: Man City defender suffers head injury after clash with Ederson

Eric Garcia is set to go to hospital for tests after a suspected head injury that forced him to be stretchered off against Arsenal after Manchester City teammate Ederson clattered him while attempting to clear the ball.

The Spaniard was unable to move on the pitch with the clash forcing a lengthy delay, but Pep Guardiola has now revealed the player is conscious.

Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne had put City 2-0 up, before Phil Foden scored a third after the game resumed.

But City’s win was overshadowed by Garcia’s condition at full-time, with Guardiola offering an update on his player.

“He responds quite well but we have to wait,” Guardiola told Sky Sports. “He’s conscious right now, it’s a good sign, I think he needs an extra test and maybe in hospital.”

Garcia, 19, had impressed before his accident with Ederson, shining at the heart of the City defence alongside Aymeric Laporte.

The teenager was handed a start at the resumption of the Premier League ahead of Nicolas Otamendi as Pep Guardiola attempts to find a long-term solution to partner Laporte.

Sterling also admitted his disappointment at Garcia’s accident, praising the way he slotted into the first team after the Premier League’s restart.

“Eric had a fantastic game, fitted in well and composed,” Sterling said.

“Sad to see him go off like that. At first it looked bad, but then he looked better.”
