Eric Bailly's reaction to Harry Maguire's defending sums up Man Utd star's woes

Eric Bailly's reaction to Harry Maguire's defending against Atalanta tells you everything you need to know about his current struggles.

The Manchester United skipper's form has taken a massive dip this season and has been at fault for various goals the Red Devils have conceded.

And he was the main culprit once again in Bergamo as he inexplicably lost track of Duvan Zapata who put the Italians 2-1 ahead before Cristiano Ronaldo came to the rescue to secure a 2-2 draw.

Maguire has been one of United's most consistent performers under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Throw in the fact, he had an exceptional Euro 2020 with England, and his poor form is hard to explain.

It seems his confidence has taken a hit and that was glaringly obvious following Zapata's goal.

Shortly after he put the hosts in front, the striker had a good chance to grab his second of the night as Atalanta hit United on the counter as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.

The Colombian was put through on goal with just Maguire to beat, but the United captain sheepishly stood off him, with what had just happened earlier clearly in the back of his mind.

Maguire's inability to engage Zapata meant he was able to get a shot away in the box, but fortunately for United, he fluffed his lines as David de Gea made a routine save.

And Bailly's reaction to his defending spoke volumes as he threw his arms up in disbelief, dumfounded why Maguire didn't close him down.

Bailly made his first start for United outwith the Carabao Cup as he has been frozen out by Solskjaer this season.

But he grabbed the opportunity with both hands as put in an impressive performance, a stark contrast to his centre-back partner Maguire.

Solskjaer said: "Eric did well. He's not played for us for a little while, he's played for the international team, he's trained really well. Eric wanted to prove himself, wanted to show what he can do and he was important for us.

"He had a couple of blocks only Eric can do and he'll take a lot of encouragement from this performance."

Bailly will likely get a run in the team too with Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof on the sidelines as the Frenchman limped off in the first half with a hamstring injury.
