Eric Bailly included in Ivory Coast AFCON squad as Manchester United youngster Amad misses out

Manchester United defender Eric Bailly has been included in the Ivory Coast squad for next month's Africa Cup of Nations, but youngster Amad has not made the cut.

Bailly is one of five Premier League players to have been included in the Elephants' squad, ahead of them kicking-off their AFCON campaign against Equatorial Guinea on January 12.

Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Willy Boly, Burnley architect-in-chief Maxwel Cornet, Nicolas Pepe of Arsenal and former United winger Wilfried Zaha have also made the cut.

However, fellow United ace Amad has not been included in the squad, with a lack of game time this season because of injury likely to be the contributing factor.

Amad, who joined United from Atalanta in a big-money deal almost a year ago, was poised to join Feyenoord on loan right at the very end of the summer transfer window, but the deal collapsed because of an injury he had sustained.

The 19-year-old has made three senior appearances for Ivory Coast, meaning his inexperience may have also contributed to the decision.

The tournament, which is being held in Cameroon, starts on Sunday, January 9 and will conclude on Sunday February 6.

Should the Ivory Coast, who are one of the favourites to win the tournament, go all the way, Bailly will miss several United matches, which could prove to be problematic for Ralf Rangnick if injury issues persist at centre-back.

Should they reach the final, the first United fixture that Bailly would be available for selection for once again would be the clash with Southampton on Saturday, February 12 at Old Trafford.

Bailly has made 41 senior appearances for his country, scoring two goals.
