Eric Bailly details private phone call with former Man United boss Jose Mourinho after Tottenham sacking

Eric Bailly has revealed his private telephone conversation with Jose Mourinho after he was relieved of his duties at Tottenham.

Interestingly, Bailly was the first signing of Mourinho's tenure at Manchester United, with the Portuguese completing a deal for Bailly for around £30m from Villarreal in 2016. "Eric has the potential to become one of the best around," Mourinho said on the transfer.

Since then, Mourinho was sacked at United and replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before joining Tottenham, where he would eventually meet the same fate, with Spurs making the decision to axe Moutinho as the club meandered in the Premier League.

It didn't take long for Mourinho to return to management, though, because he was swiftly installed as Roma's new manager, making his return to Italy and the Serie A after having enjoyed great success with Inter Milan previously in his box office career.

Now, Bailly has revealed a private telephone conversation between himself and Mourinho after his latest sacking, which certainly suggests there's still mutual respect between the pair after their time spent together at Old Trafford.

“When he [Mourinho] was sacked from Tottenham I sent him a message and when he signed for Roma I spoke to him on the phone," Bailly said to The Times.

“We had a few laughs. He’s a coach I’ve always been good with. Hopefully, he’ll do well in Italy and we’ll meet in the future.
