Eredivisie season scrapped as Dutch FA declare NO title winner or relegation

The Dutch FA have called time on the Eredivisie - with no title winner and no relegation.

Ajax and AZ Alkmaar were locked level on points at the league summit but neither will be declared champions.

The decision means second-tier leaders Cambuur - 11 points clear at the top - will be denied entry into the top flight.

It also spells a reprieve for ADO Den Haag and RKC Waalwijk who will avoid the drop despite being the bottom two clubs in the Eredivisie.

The decision follows UEFA's admission earlier this week that leagues could be called in "special cases", despite their preference remaining that every top division is played to a finish.

KNVB, the Netherlands football authority, held a ballot between clubs over how the season should be concluded after the nation's government declared no public gatherings until September 1.

Top flight clubs were asked to vote on whether promotion and relegation should take place.

However, nine teams abstained and told the KNVB to make a decisive ruling.

And on Friday they declared the campaign at a close, deciding against an expanded 20-team league.

Although the title will be left vacant, Ajax have been granted direct entry to next season's Champions League group stage.

AZ, who were behind only on goal difference, will begin at the qualifying play-off round.

Feyenoord - who played Rangers in this season's tournament, will join PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League.
