Era set to take flight

People paint the kanji characters for the new era name "Reiwa" on a kite measuring 13 meters by 13 meters and weighing one ton at Zama elementary school in Zama, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Saturday. The kite will be flown above the Sagamigawa riverbed on May 4 and 5 during a festival said to have started in the Edo period (1603-1867) to celebrate Tango no Sekku, the traditional boys' day in Japan. Each year the kanji characters on the kite reflect the current times.
