Equine flu outbreak 2019: Who is horse racing trainer Donald McCain?

Horse racing across the UK has been suspended until next Wednesday at the earliest after an outbreak of equine influenza.

Several horses in the yard of trainer Donald McCain have tested positive for the virus, causing the British Horseracing Authority to step in in order to halt the spread of infection.

But just who is McCain?

Donald McCain comes from a historic racing family, with his father Donald McCain Snr. having trained the legendary three-time Grand National winner Red Rum.

McCain Jr. took the reins from his father in 2006, and followed in his footsteps by training Ballabriggs to win the 2011 Grand National.

Based out of his Cheshire yard, McCain Jr. has also trained several Cheltenham Festival winners, including Whiteoak, Peddlers Cross, Cloudy Lane and Cinders and Ashes.

McCain has trained 55 winners over jumps so far this season, winning prize money of more than £550,000, to sit 13th in the Trainers’ Championship.
