Equador journalist jailed for insulting mayor

A journalist in Equador has been jailed for 60 days because a court ruled that he had insulted a mayor. Nelson Fueltala, who works for La Gaceta, wrote a report in June last year which quoted critical comments by the then municipal commissioner about the mayor of Pujilí, Marcelo Arroyo Ruiz. When Ruiz originally sued a local court acquitted Fueltala. But the high court overturned that decision, imposing the jail sentence and a small fine.
