Epic pictures from River of Light as Pier Head Liverpool and New Brighton light up in stunning style

The River of Light fireworks returned to Merseyside for the fourth time and the dazzling display was a huge hit with spectators.

Tens of thousands of people packed either side of the river, as two simultaneous took place at the Pier Head in Liverpool and New Brighton in Wirral.

Thankfully the weather stayed dry and the fireworks lit up the Mersey to a pumping soundtrack that included songs by Pink!, Lewis Capaldi and Calvin Harris, featuring Rag ‘n’ Bone Man.

The action got underway at 5pm with people in New Brighton being entertained by music and performances outside the Floral Pavillion.

In Liverpool people began arriving ahead of the fireworks to see the light installations that are in the city centre as part of the River of Light festival, which runs until November 9.

The fireworks began at 6.30pm and lasted 15 minutes, with huge bursts of colour including green, red and gold lighting up the river.

A huge cheer went up after the grand finale and, it was clear the event had been a success, with people in good spirits as they headed home.

Deputy Mayor and cabinet member for culture tourism and events, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “This year has been a combination of incredible light art installations and a jaw dropping fireworks display - for me it’s the best River of Light to date.

“Once again the people of Liverpool and Wirral have turned out in their thousands to support a cultural event which we’re massively grateful for.

“Don’t forget, the installations are lighting up our city each night until Saturday, so make sure you head along and make the must of this beautiful free art on our doorstep.”

On Twitter @_JonnyLowe described the fireworks as “fabulous” and @kingbenje98 said: “such an amazing firework display this year”.

Twitter user @Katepomfret11 added: “Thank you Liverpool City Council. An amazing firework display again. Becoming the highlight of all the free stuff you put on each year. Thank you”
