EPFO upgrades unified member portal: UAN activation, generation through portal discontinued; here's how you can do it now

After being unavailable for nearly a week due to a scheduled system upgrade, the EPFO's unified member portal is back online with a refreshed interface and several changes. One of the biggest updates is that UAN activation and direct UAN allotment can no longer be done through the portal. Instead, these services have been shifted to the UMANG app where they can be availed using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT). The upgraded portal also introduces a simplified UAN retrieval process, while services such as death claim filing continue to be available on the EPFO portal. Here's a look at what's changed on the new EPFO unified member portal.

This upgrade was aimed at providing faster, reliable, and secured services to its stakeholders, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) had earlier said in a statement on its official website.

Discontinuation of UAN activation on EPFO portal

The option to activate your Universal Account Number (UAN) through the EPFO’s unified member portal has been discontinued. The EPFO has now shifted this service to the UMANG app, where UAN activation can be completed using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT).

How to activate your UAN on Umang App:

Step 1: Download the UMANG app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Step 2: Open the app and select EPFO Services.

Step 3: Choose "UAN Activation" under "UAN Services Through Face Auth" and follow the on-screen instructions.

Discontinuation of direct UAN allotment

The option for direct UAN allotment through the EPF Unified Member Portal has been discontinued. The EPFO has now moved this service to the UMANG app, where you can generate your UAN using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT).

To generate your UAN, download the UMANG app, select EPFO Services, and choose "UAN Allotment and Activation" under "UAN Services Through Face Auth.”

UAN allotment for existing PF account

If you already have a PF account but do not have a UAN, you can use this option to get one. Simply verify your mobile number, enter the required member details, and complete the process to generate and link a UAN with your existing PF account.

UAN retrieval

You can now retrieve or find your Universal Account Number (UAN) in two simple steps. Enter your registered mobile number and upload the required identity/address proof. Then enter the OTP received on your mobile phone to verify your details and retrieve your UAN.

Death claim filing

Nominees can continue to file death claims, including pension-related claims, through the EPF unified member portal. Before starting the process, make sure the beneficiary's Aadhaar-linked mobile number is active and the required bank account details are readily available. The beneficiary should have a valid mobile linked with their Aadhaar number.

Keep the following bank account details of the beneficiaries/nominee(s) readily available while using the functionality.

Documents required as applicable

Death certificate of member

Bank account proof [cancelled cheque /passbook] of beneficiary

Date of birth (proof of beneficiary)

Restrictions on the file being uploaded

Size of the each uploaded file should not be greater than 2 MB
