Derry City defender Eoin Toal has completed a move to EFL League One club Bolton Wanderers. The deal was confirmed on Wednesday.

Toal - a former Northern Ireland Under 21 international - made 155 appearances for the Candystripes over six seasons. He was also the club's captain.

Derry boss Ruaidhri Higgins paid tribute to Toal following confirmation of the defender’s transfer to Bolton.

“On behalf of the management, players and staff at Derry City I want to put on record our thanks to Eoin for his service to the club," Higgins told Derry's website.

“He has been an absolute pleasure to work with both as a player and a captain. I want to wish him every success at his new club and in his career going forward.”

Toal had been a long-term target of Bolton who made previous offers which were turned down. Ian Evatt's side returned with an improved bid which was accepted. The player becomes Bolton's fourth transfer window signing this summer.
