Eoghan McDermott replacement auditions held as RTE seek Doireann Garrihy's new co-host

RTE has audition more than a dozen people to replace Eoghan McDermott as Doireann Garrihy's co-host on the 2FM breakfast show.

The national broadcaster has been secretly holding pilots in recent days in a bid to find a new host for the coveted slot.

Spin FM DJ Marty Guilfoyle is the favourite for the gig, having previously presented a successful show with Doireann, reports the Sunday World.

Doireann, 28, has been off air for a number of weeks plotting a new direction for the show, with Tara Stewart and Stephen Byrne filling in for her.

The paper reports that other names in the frame to join her as the new host includes Brian Dowling, Carl Mullen, James Kavanagh, Lottie Ryan, Blathnaid Treacy and Greg O'Shea.

It's understood RTE bosses want a male-female duo to host the show.

Eoghan, 38, departed the show suddenly in February.

In a statement released at the rime, RTE said: "RTE confirms that Eoghan McDermott will not be returning to RTE 2FM.

"His contract is due to expire shortly. RTÉ is developing a new direction for the 2FM Breakfast Show which will be revealed in the coming weeks. Doireann Garrihy will remain with the show."
