Eoghan McDermott: Odds slashed on one RTE presenter replacing 2FM star

RTÉ radio host Carl Mullan has seen his odds for replacing Eoghan McDermott on 2FM slashed.

Earlier this week, word broke that Mr McDermott was set to hang up the mic for personal reasons.

The 37-year-old's shock decision came after he took unplanned annual leave two weeks ago.

He had been presenting RTÉ 2FM’s breakfast show alongside Doireann Garrihy.

Since joining the national broadcaster from Spin FM in 2014, McDermott has hosted a number of shows across TV and radio.

Since taking annual leave, he has not been on-air and is now set to walk away from the Breakfast Show he co-hosted for the past two years.

And now it looks like the broadcaster could have found his replacement.

The Irish Daily Star learned during the week that Carl could be next in line to join Doireann in the mornings.

And now the odds on him replacing Eoghan have tumbled, according to bookmakers.

BoyleSports has trimmed the host of the RTE Player series ‘Go Outside’ into 5/1 from 25/1 to work alongside Doireann.

Marty Guilfoyle remains the 3/1 favourite to replace Eoghan on the breakfast show - should his departure from 2FM be confirmed.

The SPIN1038 and Spin South West DJ previously hosted The Zoo Crew with Doireann and listeners loved the chemistry the pair had.

Carl has been providing cover shifts at the station when presenters are on annual leave, while he also presents Weekend Breakfast with Aifric O’Connell.

Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “The growing rumours about Eoghan McDermott getting set to walk away from the Breakfast Show he has hosted alongside Doireann Garrihy for the past two years have resulted in a new name being linked to replace him.

"Doireann’s old colleague from Spin 1038 Marty Guilfoyle is 3/1 from 10/1 to jump ship and join RTE 2FM but Carl Mullan is the biggest mover into 5/1 from 25/1 following strong support on Sunday morning.”
