Enzo Maresca flexes Celtic managerial muscles as dark horse to fill Parkhead vacancy masterminds 7-1 hammering

His name has slightly dropped out of the rumour mill to make way for some big names such as Roy Keane and Chris Wilder in recent days.

But potential Celtic managerial candidate Enzo Maresca has reminded everyone why he's just as serious a contender to replace Neil Lennon in Glasgow's east end as the star studded figures who have also been linked.

The Italian coach masterminded a mammoth 7-1 victory for his Manchester City Under-23 side on Monday afternoon.

Pep Guardiola's protege smashed Southampton in their Premier League 2 clash and his side are well clear at the top of the table.

They are often praised for the free-flowing football they play while racking up win after win.

Striker Liam Delap, who has already made his first-team debut, bagged a hat-trick while Felix Nmecha struck twice in the final seven minutes.

Callum Doyle and Adrian Bernabe added to the rout, with Caleb Watts replying for Southampton in the second half.

Maresca represents something different in terms of a bright yet untested manager although it's likely a director of football will be installed at Parkhead before a new manager is chosen.

Manchester United legend, former Celtic player and now outspoken pundit Keane is said to be keen on the role, while Wilder has been linked since leaving Sheffield United last week.
