Enzio Boldewijn double fires Notts County to victory over League Two Walsall

Jim O’Brien was back in a Notts County shirt this afternoon as the midfielder was one of several players on trial during the 2-1 win over Walsall.

The Scotsman signed for the Magpies in January, but was released as a result of the club’s relegation from the EFL.

However, O’Brien, a hugely popular figure at Meadow Lane, is currently training with Neal Ardley’s side and played 60 minutes of the clash against the Saddlers.

He joined former Coventry players, Liam O’Brien, Chris Camwell and Dion Kelly-Evans who were also on trial with ex-Burton defender Damian McCrory and Nathan Tyson also hoping to impress.

They certainly contributed as Notts maintained their unbeaten start to pre-season although had to come from behind to snatch a draw against the Saddlers.

Dan Scarr had put the visitors ahead just before half-time when he lashed into the roof of the net after Notts had failed to deal with a corner.

However, Notts  fought their way back into the contest and duly levelled through a clincial finish from Enzio Boldewijn after good work from Mitch Rose.

Tyson nearly added to his hat-trick he scored against Ilkeston last week when he seized on a mistake from goalkeeper Jack Rose only for his shot to clip the goalkeeper’s chest.

However, Alfie Bates nearly re-established Walsall’s lead with a dipping effort from 25 yards which caressed the roof of the net.

But back came Notts  to win the game with Boldewijn lashing in a terrific free-kick  after Tyson had been fouled by Rose.

Despite the financial crisis which is gripping Notts, which has seen his players go unpaid since the end of May, Ardley would have been delighted with the victory and the players’ professionalism.

They are next back in action on Tuesday night when they entertain League One Ipswich at Meadow Lane.
