Local US media reported that a prominent lawyer and an environmental advocate died after setting himself on fire at a park in New York in a grisly protest against pollution and the use of fossil fuel.

The body of David Buckel, was found in the Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

He left a note in a shopping cart not far from his body and also emailed it to several news media outlets, including The New York Times, reported the newspaper.

“Pollution ravages our planet, oozing inhabitability via air, soil, water and weather,” he wrote in the letter.

“Most humans on the planet now breathe air made unhealthy by fossil fuels, and many die early deaths as a result — my early death by fossil fuel reflects what we are doing to ourselves,” he added.

Police confirmed to the German news agency that the body of the 60-year-old man had been found in the park after he set himself on fire but could not confirm the contents of the note.
