Environment Agency flood alerts in place for Gateshead and Northumberland after night of heavy rain

Two flood alerts have been issued for the North East after heavy rain battered the region overnight.

The Environment Agency issued two separate alerts on Tuesday morning for areas in Northumberland and Gateshead.

The first covers areas around the River Pont and River Blyth and the second covers those in Gateshead around the River Derwent.

The 'be prepared' alerts tell people to avoid walking or driving alongside the rivers but both say that properties are not expected to flood.

Here are the warnings in full:

Rivers Pont and Blyth

"Overnight we have seen heavy rainfall over the River Pont catchment which has resulted in rising river levels. The main areas of concern are around Stamfordham Heugh Mill and Ponteland, where levels suggest that there may be flooding to low lying land and roads close to the river this morning (Tuesday 5th November).

"We expect the river level to peak around 10am and remain high during the afternoon, though no flooding to properties is currently forecast and warnings are not expected to be issued.

"Take care near the areas of concern and monitor your local weather conditions. Avoid walking or driving along riverside roads and footpaths. We are monitoring river levels closely and our operational teams are out on the ground checking and clearing any blockages from rivers."

Rivers Derwent, Team, Don and estuarine tributaries

"Overnight we have seen heavy rainfall over the River Derwent catchment which has resulted in rising river levels. The main area of concern is Blackhall Mill, where levels suggest that there may be flooding to low lying land and roads close to the river this morning (Tuesday 5th November).

The map of the current flood alerts (Environment Agency)

"We expect the river to remain high until around 12:00 noon today when levels should start to fall. No flooding to properties is currently forecast and warnings are not expected to be issued.

"Take care near the areas of concern and monitor your local weather conditions. Avoid walking or driving along riverside roads and footpaths. We are monitoring river levels closely and our operational teams are out on the ground checking and clearing any blockages from rivers."
