The National School Business Management Awards are a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on all the fabulous work school business management professionals are undertaking across the UK.

Below are our tips on how to enter, what to include in your entry and some information about the judges.

How to enter:

  • All entries must be submitted online using the entry form.
  • The application form asks you to explain your submission and how it meets the criteria, which you can find below. Please write no more than 500 words for each of the criteria questions.
  • In addition to the written submission you may include up to two pieces of supporting material. Each attachment should be no more than two sides of A4 in length and uploaded in a pdf or word format.
  • You can find the entry form here.

Essential entry tips:

  • Read the criteria carefully.
  • Make sure your submission includes plenty of supporting information, with relevant facts and figures where possible. It should prove your expertise and leave the judges in no doubt about the impact your work has made.
  • Some entries will require you to focus on specific activities and information. If so, please ensure that you address this in your application.
  • You must fill in the school’s details as well as your own information when completing the application. Please note: we will use the school name as well as the individual nominees’ details when we are publicising the event shortlists so please seek all necessary permissions before entering.

The judges:

  • Valentine Mulholland is a policy adviser at the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), an independent trade union and professional association representing more than 29,000 school leaders in all sectors of education, including school business managers (SBMs). She leads the association’s work on school business management and represents the interests of SBM members.
  • Val Andrew is a business leadership specialist with the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL). Her professional background is in corporate and commercial finance. She has worked in education for 25 years, practising business management/business leadership roles across both the primary and secondary sectors. Andrew continues to raise the profile of the profession at national level, encourage wider recognition within the context of educational leadership and champions specific issues, eg equity in their pay and remuneration.
  • Russell Dalton became a SBM 10 years ago after a career in the Army. Since then he has worked at Pershore high school in Worcestershire. When he arrived at the school it was in deficit and through a lot of hard work there is now a surplus. Dalton is a strong advocate of collaborative working and he and his business team support a number of primary schools.
  • Justine Berkeley is owner and managing director of SBM Services Ltd, a company born out of her passion to support schools with all their business and financial management needs. Justine is a designated specialist leader of education, an approved trainer and fellow of the National Association of School Business Management, and is a regular presenter at national conferences. Berkeley is committed to high levels of customer care and has visited 10 Downing Street after receiving national recognition as winner of SBM of the Year.
  • Wendy Berliner is an award-winning journalist who has spent half her career at The Guardian, first as education correspondent, then as a news editor and later as an education features writer. She is a former education features editor of The Independent and has edited the Times Educational Supplement. Berliner rejoined The Guardian in 2011 to launch the Guardian Teacher Network and now leads the Guardian’s online professional networks as head of editorial.
