Entry ban forces UN envoy to step down

The UN special envoy to Burma, Razali Ismail, said yesterday that he had given up the job, expressing frustration with the military junta for its treatment of the pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Mr Razali, a Malaysian diplomat, said he had not renewed his contract because the junta had not allowed him into Burma since March 2004.

He said the UN should find someone "more acceptable" to Burma. Mr Razali helped secure Ms Suu Kyi's release after 19 months of house arrest in 2002. But hopes for democratic change evaporated when she returned to house arrest in 2003.
