Entire year group sent home at Haverfordwest High School after one Covid case

A Pembrokeshire school has partially closed because of Covid in the same week a cluster of confirmed cases was identified in the south of the county.

A year nine pupil at Haverfordwest High VC tested positive for Covid and the school decided to send the entire year group home.

The rest of the school, which has 1,600 children on its roll, will remain open for all other pupils.

A statement from the school said: "We have been informed that a Year 9 pupil has tested positive for Covid-19. We wish them a speedy recovery.

"As a precautionary measure and to enable us to complete all of the necessary Track and Trace processes, the school will be closed to Year 9 Pupils today. The school remains open to all other year groups.

"Until further notice, Year 9 students should stay at home and isolate until further instructions are given. Lessons for all other year groups will continue as usual."

It comes just days after Pembrokeshire council warned Tenby residents to look out for coronavirus symptoms after 22 coronavirus cases have been linked to social and sporting events and local schools.

On Monday, June 21, pupils at Ysgol Greenhill School in Tenby made the switch to online learning following a number of children having to self-isolate and increasing case rates of coronavirus.

Some parts of the county, including Pembroke East, Saundersfoot and Tenby now have infection rates of 129 people per 100,000. In Haverfordwest, rates are still around 30 per 100,000. You can see the latest stats where you live here.
