Entire year group in self-isolation following positive coronavirus case at Newport High School

An entire high school year group is in self-isolation after a person tested positive for coronavirus.

Parents of pupils at Newport High School, in Bettws, were informed of the news via an email from headteacher Gill Lee on Monday.

Mrs Lee told parents she has been notified of a case in Year 9, and all pupils in that year group would need to self-isolate in line with Welsh Government guidance.

The headteacher said the school remains open to all other pupils.

In her letter, Mrs Lee said: "This afternoon, I was notified of a confirmed case of COVID-19 in year 9.

"In line with guidance from Welsh Government, Environmental Health and, Newport City Council all pupils in year 9 will need to self-isolate for 14 days. School remains open to all other pupils.

"All close contacts of the case are in the process of receiving appropriate advice."

Mrs Lee reminded parents to continue to be alert for symptoms of Covid-19 and to book a test if symptoms develop.

The school is now the eighth school in the city to confirm a positive case of the virus.

Seven other schools - Lliswerry High, St Joseph's Roman Catholic High, St Julian's School, Ysgol Gymraeg Casnewydd, Eveswell Primary, St Gabriel's Primary and Malpas Park Primary - have reported cases since last week.

On Monday, Wales recorded its largest daily increase in case numbers since June.

The nation's weekly rate of infections now stands at 23 for every 100,000 people – past the rate at which a quarantine would be imposed on a foreign country.

In Newport, the seven-day average number of cases, adjusted for population, now stands at 48.5 per 100,000 people (as of 2pm Monday, September 14).

The city is now the area with the third highest seven-day average number of cases, behind Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taf, which have 92.2 and 59.7 cases per 100,000 people respectively.
