Entire year group in self-isolation after positive coronavirus case discovered in Newport school

A high school year group is in self-isolation after a positive coronavirus case.

Pupils in year 9 at Lliswerry High School in Newport have been asked to self-isolate immediately after a positive lateral flow test by a student.

The student must now take a PCR test, the type of test taken at a drive through or walk in test centre. If that test is taken within 24 hours and is negative, all contacts can end their self-isolation and return to school.

If the test is positive or can't be taken within 24 hours, all contacts must isolate for ten days.

It comes just over a week after all year 11 students and a "small number of year 10 learners" in the school were told to self-isolate after a positive case.

A letter from headteacher Neil Davies to parents on Monday said: "Unfortunately, I have been notified of a positive lateral flow test result for Covid-19 with a year 9 learner.

"In line with guidance from Welsh Government, Environmental Health and, Newport City Council all learners in Year 9 will need to self-isolate immediately.

"The positive test that has been reported to us was undertaken using a lateral flow test (the type taken at home using a swab, which returns a result within 30 minutes). The learner concerned must now take a PCR test (the type of test taken at a drive through or walk in test centre).

"If the PCR test is taken within 24 hours and the result is negative, then all contacts will be able to stop self-isolating. If the test is positive or if it cannot be taken within 24 hours, then all contacts will have to continue to self-isolate for ten days."

"I will be in contact with you again as soon as possible to confirm whether your child can end their self-isolation or whether they need to continue for the full ten days. If they do need to continue for ten days, I will confirm the end date of their self-isolation period. In the meantime, online blended learning will be in place until learners are able to return to school."

Wales recorded a Covid death for the first time in 12 days on Monday. 75 new positive cases were also recorded, but the infection rate remains low. Read the latest figures here.
