Entire year group at school in Swansea Valley to study at home because of staff sickness

An entire year group at a school will be taught at home for the next week.

The comp in the Swansea Valley has not given an official reason, but it is believed to be Coronavirus related.

The announcement comes as Covid rates across the region have continued to rise, In Swansea 460 new people had a confirmed positive test result reported on 20 September 2021.

Last week, between 14 September 2021 and 20 September 2021, 1,753 people had a confirmed positive test result. This shows an increase of 9.4% compared to the previous 7 days.

The news has sparked some exasperation from parents, amid yet more disruption to their children's education

However, headteacher Lee Hitchings said the school had "done everything possible" to avoid the situation.

He addedl "The Health and Safety of pupils and staff is paramount. We hope these issues will stabilise towards the end of the week, at which point we will bring Year 9 pupils back into school as soon as we can."

Earlier this week a whole primary school has been sent home in Powys after almost half the school recorded positive Covid test results.

Forty per cent of pupils and 50% of staff have tested positive at Cradoc Primary School in Brecon over the past couple of weeks, since term resumed in early September, which the local authority said left the school with no alternative but to close. You can read more about this story here.

However, the Welsh Government has said that despite rising numbers of Covid cases in Wales, an extended school half term firebreak lockdown in October is not yet being discussed.

Rural affairs minister Lesley Griffiths said that a firebreak has not yet been discussed by the Labour Government's cabinet but did not rule it out saying that coronavirus is a "very, very fluid situation".
